The Service Department in 1932.
The Gates Mills Service Department was formed in 1920 and took over the responsibilities for the roads and bridges when the Village incorporated. George Brown was the first appointed Service Director followed in order by Thomas Merrigan, Charles Fruend, William Henderson, Thomas Hladky, Gary Pesuit and currently serving is Dave Biggert. In 1921 only two of the Villages roads were paved and only one lane wide.

The Service Department provides a wide variety of services including the repair and maintenance of all Village roadways and bridges, maintenance of public properties, snow removal on Village roads, and tree maintenance within the Village right-of-way. The Service Department office hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.

At the present time, the Service Department has employed 7 laborers including a certified tree arborist and a certified mechanic. Members of the Service Department receive fire training and are required to be members on the Volunteer Fire Department. Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required for those individuals operating the large snow plowing equipment.

Snow Removal

The snow and ice removal service on Village roadways is dictated by weather conditions with the main roads given first priority for plowing and salting to insure emergency accessibility and traffic flow. Secondary residential streets are plowed as soon as possible thereafter.

Snow removal and salting for Mayfield Road within the Village of Gates Mills is the responsibility of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

The Village currently uses a combination of salt and # 8 slag on the roadways to prevent ice forming and to improve traction.

Rubbish Collection

Currently Landmark Disposal is the waste hauler for the removal of typical household waste and recyclables within the Village. A schedule of collection days is available at the Village Hall.

Commingled recyclable materials including aluminum or steel cans, glass or # 1 and # 2 plastic must be placed in a blue bag and placed next to the garbage. Newspapers and paper materials should be dry and placed in a brown bag for pick up. Cardboard, including cereal boxes and corrugated, should be flattened, tied in a bundle and placed along side other recyclables.

Questions regarding scheduling, missed pick-ups, recycling, or special pick-ups should be directed to Landmark Disposal at (888) 722 - 2022.

Village Cemeteries

Currently within the Village, are two historic cemeteries for village residents. The North Cemetery is located on Chagrin River Road near Sherman Road and dates from 1810 and was part of a family farm. Originally it contained 1.25 acres until 1969 when it was expanded to 2.93 acres.

The South Cemetery is on Chagrin River road just south of Old Mill Road and once served as a private cemetery for the Dean family. Originally it contained two acres and was increased to three acres in 1957.

Cemetery gates are opened on a limited schedule and only natural flowers and plantings are allowed. For plot availability please contact the Village Service Department.
