Village Officials: From the Mayor

May 2010 Pink Sheet We have had the most beautiful flowering spring!

Every bush, shrub and tree has been covered with the most blossoms from top to bottom that I can remember in many years.  Every flowering bush, shrub or tree is, or has been, completely covered in blooms.  Then the rains came and started the cycle of the next bloom.

The weed cycle is also enjoying the same rain.

The worst of the weeds arrive so quickly and go to seed almost immediately, like Garlic Cress or Garlic Mustard.  Alliaria esculente is a widespread plant that arrived from Europe many years ago.  It has colonized everywhere.  It is edible, but would take forever to eradicate.

If you want to try, pull it before it seeds itself.  Its seeds will stay in the ground for seven years, and then still germinate.  The seeds can be used in recipes.

There are other weeds, but this biennial is one of the worst.

There are so many things to do in May in the garden world.  We can be busy from morning to dusk.

Go out and smell the roses, and enjoy all the beauty around us.
