Snow and Ice Control Update

With the heavy ongoing winter weather, recent concerns have risen in Northeast Ohio regarding the reduced availability of rock salt and the effect it has on snow and ice control operations. Stockpiles at the regional salt companies have been depleted and salt is being delivered as it is removed from the mines and processed. The supply and delivery challenge is being faced by all local communities in the area.

The Village of Gates Mills currently has a limited supply of rock salt on hand, with additional orders placed and deliveries coming in sporadically. Given the current weather forecast, the Village will be closely monitoring and managing our current salt supply keeping in mind the priority of all motorists.

During this salt shortage, it may become necessary to reduce the amount of rock salt applied to the primary roads, only curves and intersections will be treated on secondary or tertiary roads. Normal salt applications will take place in the event of icy conditions.

Motorists and the general public are asked to exercise caution when driving on snow-covered streets. Please drive slowly and give yourself extra time to get where you need to go. The Village Administration appreciates the patience and understanding of all motorists as efforts are made to provide the highest level of service possible given the current salt situation.
