Gates Mills

From the Mayor -July & August 2025
Monday, Jun. 30th

Hello Villagers,

We seem to be in the heart of summer. Hot and sunny days! The mix of rain, sun and heat has produced a lush green landscape in our village. Let’s cross our fingers that the rain takes leave. We have had some neighborhood flooding the past few weeks that created modest damage and a lot of inconvenience.

Here are several updates:

On June 12, over a dozen residents gathered at Town Hall to discuss senior services. After introducing ourselves, we heard a presentation from the CEO of the Community Partnership on Aging. She shared trends, challenges, and demographic data about the aging population in both our county and our village.

We learned that while many services had once been provided within Gates Mills—often by local groups caring for their elderly members—those efforts have waned over time due to factors like the pandemic and natural attrition. Everyone agreed that our village's strong sense of community and spirit of volunteerism can be revived. However, to make this sustainable, we’ll also need structure and defined processes. A successful approach may blend CPA’s framework, a renewed push from village organizations, and individual volunteers.

We plan to draft a preliminary proposal outlining how this initiative could come together. I briefed Council on the meeting on June 17, and they expressed their encouragement and support. I anticipate a follow-up meeting with the original group and any additional interested residents before the July Council meeting. All are welcome to join!

In other news:

  • We’re still awaiting the delivery of the new drinking fountain for Marston Park near the tennis courts. As soon as it arrives, we’ll prioritize installation.
  • The structural engineer’s report on the pedestrian bridge is still pending.
  • The 2025 Road Program is underway, starting with county roads, followed by local streets like Hillcreek Lane and Andrews Lane.
  • Swing and jazz returns to the summer band concert on Sunday, July 20. Pack your picnic and join us on the Village Green for music and fun for all ages!
  • The Gates Mills Elementary School PTC is considering hosting a 5K on September 22. It’s been ten years since our last running event—this should be a great time!

And finally, the Fourth of July parade is just around the corner! With music, floats, classic cars, and the joy of walking in the parade, it's a beloved tradition that brings families together across generations. Many thanks to the Improvement Society for their leadership. We hope to see you there!
