Gates Mills

From the Mayor -May 2026
Friday, May. 29th

Hello Villagers,

As May unfolds in our village, spring arrives in full and memorable color—flowering trees, fresh green landscapes, and longer sunlit days that once again draw us outdoors. Everywhere you look, there is a renewed sense of energy. This season reminds me why Gates Mills is such a remarkable place to call home and encourages us to look ahead with pride, gratitude, and a shared sense of purpose.

In that same spirit, I invite you to join in a special Arbor Day celebration on May 9 at 10:00 a.m. in Marston Park, where we will proudly recognize our designation as a Tree City USA community. Together, we will plant two trees in meaningful remembrance of Laurie Peterson and Tom Liederbach, whose service and dedication left a lasting imprint on our village. This event reflects the strength of collaboration in Gates Mills and is made possible through the joint efforts of the Village Tree Canopy Committee, the Gates Mills Garden Club, and the Gates Mills Land Conservancy—a partnership that truly embodies our shared commitment to preserving the natural beauty and character of our community. Spring’s celebrations continue with Cindy Halle! welcoming renowned florist Charles Phillips on May 8 and 9th on the terrace, the Gates Mills Environmental Education Center Spring Plant Sale & Open House on May 8, and the Gates Mills Garden Club’s cherished tradition of hanging May baskets throughout the village, followed by their Plant Sale and Vintage Boutique on May 23.

As we enjoy these seasonal traditions, our Village is also proudly celebrating an extraordinary milestone—our 200th anniversary—with the unveiling of our official Bicentennial logo, displayed in the upper right corner of this page. The mill featured in the logo honors the sawmill built by Halsey Gates and his brother Nathaniel, whose enterprise was the catalyst for Gates Mills becoming a thriving hamlet. This landmark year will also be celebrated with many events. One is through the arts, with the Gates Mills Players presenting “It Takes a Village,” an evening of ten ten‑minute one‑act plays performed over the last two weekends in May. Finally, I encourage residents to attend a Leadership Luncheon on Wednesday, May 20, featuring Wendy Albin Sattin, Director of the Community Partnership on Aging (CPA), who will share valuable information about services available to support seniors and caregivers—an important reminder that caring for one another has always been, and continues to be, at the heart of Gates Mills.

As always, I am grateful for the many volunteers, organizations, and residents who give so generously of their time and talents to make Gates Mills such a vibrant and caring community. I hope you will join in the many events this May, enjoy the beauty of the season, and continue to celebrate the people, history, and shared spirit that make our village truly special.
