Fire - Home Fire Safety

The Fire Department has expanded its services to include voluntary home safety inspection surveys to all the residents of the Village of Gates Mills. The surveys are performed by State certified inspectors and are intended to identify potential fire and/or safety hazards in and around a home. Placement of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire alarm system components, and home fire escape plans are covered in the survey.

Childrens Program

The Fire Department school age program is designed to educate children through the local schools and summer camps about fire safety issues and how to better prepare themselves and their families in case of an emergency. Students are instructed an a wide variety of topics including how and when to use 911, Get Out - Stay Out, Stop - Drop - Roll, and escape plans.

The Gates Mills Fire Department Cadet Program was established in 1999 for high school student's ages 14 - 17 that are interested in possibly pursuing a future career in the fire service. The Cadets attend the regular fire department meetings and participate in training evolutions to get a chance to see all the mental and physical requirements of being a firefighter.

The Gates Mills Fire Department was established in 1927 when council passed an ordinance "To provide for establishment and organization of a Village Fire Department." The first Village fire engine was a 1917 Chevrolet purchased in 1927 from the American LaFrance Company for approximately $850 and was housed in the first station located on the corner of Epping Road and Main Street. The department operates as a volunteer organization whose members are on a paid on call status.
